AJ-FFP fireFightingPole training

Theory

Practical exercise

AJ-FFP organizes training for fire department trainers. The training can be done online, and that’s why the fire department's own organization can easily train its own firefighters.

In practical exercises, the AJ-FFP Firefighting Pole is assembled and sprayed on the target.

Extinguishing

Practical exercise

Extinguishing

is easy and safe. Aggressive extinguishing from the outside can be started immediately with a small number of firefighters. Safety personnel are not needed when extinguishing takes place from the outside.

Let's start with the theory

Important physics

The vaporization of water binds energy and the fire goes out when the temperature drops low enough. Reducing the diameter of the water droplet increases the contact area. So that we can get the largest possible contact surface for the water drop. We have to break a drop of water in the nozzle. Bernoulli's principle helps here.

We increase the speed of the water by using nozzle acceleration funnels. After this, a fast stream of water hits the reflective surface and we get a small droplet of water mist.

With a water droplet diameter of 0.3-0.4 mm, a contact surface area is 20 m2 is obtained from 1 liter of water. By reducing the water drop to a diameter of 0.15 mm, the result is more than 30 m2

The viscosity of water changes as the temperature changes.

At 20 °C, the viscosity of water is 1.0016 mPa·S

At 10 °C, the viscosity of water is 1.3059 mPa·S

This means that the water pressure must be increased when the temperature drops, so that we get a sufficiently high shower pressure.

More physics

A standard hoze-nozzle sucks in air along with the water flow. This transfers oxygen to the fire target. A bigger problem is the unfavorable air flow along with the water flow. This airflow isolates the water droplets from the hot combustion gases, preventing maximum vaporization. This problem does not exist with AJ-FFP because the water jet is produced inside the fire target.

Active extingquishing.

In order to maximize the vaporization of the small droplet water mist, we need to move the AJ-FFP back and forth in the burning room or cavity. We take the nozzle in the space to every place where there are hot fire gases. Look at the color of the combustion gases. When the color changes to white vapor, the flames in the room have gone out andyou can switch to extinguishing the fire from the wall on the side of the opening

extinguishing the fire from the wall on the side of the opening

After the flames in the room are extinguished, we hold the nozzle for a few more seconds inside the window opening so that the wall facing the window is extinguished. All rooms must be turned off one after the other. Make sure that already extinguished spaces do not light up again.

Practical exercises

AJ-FFP assembly

  1. Place the AJ-FFP parts on a flat, clean surface.
  2. Hold the valve with the other hand.
  3. Choose either the nozzle pipe or the extension pipe as needed.
  4. Grasp the pipe to be connected approx. 3 ft away from the fitting.
  5. Place the pipe to be connected in the valve adapter and gently push it to the bottom.
  6. Turn the thread clockwise to hand tension.
  7. If the length needs to be increased, remove the nozzle tube and add extension tubes before the nozzle tube.

3-way valve with t-drilling

The valve has 2 positions.

  1. Closed and draining
  2. Extingquishing

  • When the AJ-FFP is in a 2 or 4 meter configuration, keep the drain plug at the end of the 90 degree draining tubepipe.
  • When the AJ-FFP is in the 6m configuration, remove the drain plug to make the AJ-FFP lighter and easier to use.

AJ-FFP usage exercise

  1. Practice positioning with a firefighter partner.
  2. The first firefighter takes care of using the AJ-FFP
  3. The secong firefighter holds the fire hose approx. 2-3 meters away from the valve and helps the hose move lightly.
  4. Practice moving the AJ-FFP quickly inside the target.

Warning

Remember the protective distances for electrical cables.

AJ-FFP is designed for extinguishing fires from outside the building. Do not use it for any other purpose!

Smoke diving

A small droplet of water mist, causes efficient vaporization. Do not dive into the smoke at the same time as AJ-FFP is used.

Training tips

  1. Before the smoke diving exercise, let the object burn strongly in the full burn phase.
  2. Stop using AJ-FFP and wait approx. 30 seconds before the smoke diving exercise.
  3. Make a normal extinguish attack inside the fire target.
  4. If the building has 2 floors, you can continue extinguishing with AJ-FFP on the second floor.

Operation after use

Inspect and maintain parts after use

  1. Separate the stems from each other
  2. Check the condition of the parts
  3. Remove loose dirt
  4. Check the nozzle. Remove sand and dirt.
  5. Let the parts dry
  6. If necessary, lubricate the threads with a dry lubricant
  7. Transfer back to the fire truck

Learn about a successful extingquishing

  1. Think about what went well
  2. Think about what you could improve or do otherwise
